I've long known that there must be a good movie hiding within the mess that is The Hobbit trilogy. Your reason for cutting it is perfectly valid, it's not book-canon and fits more snugly in your Durin's Folk edit that actually dwells on Gandalf's story, but I just thought it was one of the strongest moments of the whole trilogy and perfectly encapsulates the soul of the story. While Dustin did find a way to bridge the gap between the Eagle rescue and Beorn's house (and very well done that was), he just jump-cut from the Troll hole to Rivendell, leaving the jarring implication that it was at the back of the Troll hole.
